If you have children, pets, or a busy household, you may notice your interior paintinglooks a little worse for wear in some areas. Or, perhaps you see scrapes or small chips on your exterior painting—but the imperfections aren’t large enough for a complete home painting makeover. That’s when touch-up painting is needed, and my expert painters in Chevy Chase, MD have compiled a few tips for perfect touch-ups.
Check the Temperature
When dealing with touch-ups, exterior painting is quite sensitive to the temperature, especially when painting in temperatures between 40 and 60 degrees. Generally, if the temperature is 10 degrees cooler than the temperature when paint was initially applied, your touch-up coats will be lighter in color—and vice versa. Be sure that your touch-up coats are applied in temperatures as close to the initial coat’s temperature as possible.
Use the Same Application Method
It’s important to use the same application that you used originally for touch-up exterior or interior painting, so, if you used a paint roller for the first application, use it for touch-up painting too. Otherwise, if you attempt to use a paintbrush for the touch-up, you may notice inconsistencies in your finished product. My interior painters at Benchmark Painting & Carpentry know that although touch-up painting is tedious, careful work brings flawless results.
Leftover Paint Brings Best Results
Even if you know the exact color of your wall, it is often tricky to match a new can of paint exactly to an older can. The slightest variation in formula can end in different results, making your subtle touch-ups glaringly obvious, with disappointing outcomes. Save your leftover paint—when touch-up time comes, you’ll be glad to see that old can.
